Jeffrey D. Katz, Esq. of JDKatz, P.C. was recently interviewed on FOX 5 Washington DC about the important estate planning documents college students over 18 years old should prioritize signing before returning to campus. Specifically, Attorney Katz said parents should work with their children on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) waiver. This is so parents may access their children’s educational records and advocate on their behalf should any academic issues, disciplinary issues, or other issues with their education arise. Katz also noted the importance of a medical power of attorney, which may allow parents to make medical decisions on behalf of their children should they, unfortunately, find themselves in a situation where they cannot make these decisions independently. Also mentioned was the importance of a living will, durable power of attorney, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) authorization.
